4 Reasons to Call an Automotive Locksmith Instead of the Dealer
When something goes wrong with your car keys, the dealer is often the first place people think of. But a dealer usually needs the car brought in, which can mean a tow and a wait. An automotive locksmith comes to you. Here are four common reasons to call one.
1. You are locked out
Keys on the seat, doors locked. A technician can open most vehicles with tools designed to avoid damage to the door, glass and weather seals. Trying a coat hanger or a slim jim yourself risks scratches and broken lock linkages.
2. You lost your only key
Losing the last key does not mean towing the car. A locksmith can often cut a new key from the vehicle itself and program a transponder chip on site. You will need proof of ownership.
3. Your key broke
Keys wear and can snap in a door or the ignition. A locksmith extracts the broken piece and cuts a replacement, usually in the same visit.
4. The ignition is failing
If the key sticks, will not turn or turns without starting the car, the ignition cylinder may be worn. A locksmith can repair or replace the ignition where the car is parked.
