5 Ways to Fix a Frozen Car Door Lock

Illustration of a car with a key above it

Menlo Park rarely freezes, but if you drive to the Sierra for a ski weekend, a frozen car lock is a real possibility. Here are safe ways to deal with it.

1. Rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer

Isopropyl alcohol lowers the freezing point of water. Apply a little to the key and gently work it into the lock.

2. Diluted vinegar

A mix of vinegar and water sprayed on the door seal can help prevent re-freezing. Avoid getting it on paint for long periods.

3. Commercial de-icer

Lock de-icer comes in small tubes made for the job. Keep one in your bag, not in the car.

4. An ice scraper

Clear ice from around the door edge and handle so the door can open once the lock turns.

5. Gentle heat

Warm the key with your hands or a lighter for a few seconds and insert it carefully. Never pour hot water on the lock or glass; it can crack the glass and refreeze.

When to call a locksmith

If the key bends, the lock will not turn after thawing, or a key snaps, stop and call a locksmith. For help back home in Menlo Park, see automotive locksmith services.
