Why Deadbolt Locks Are a Good Choice for Home Security
A knob lock alone is easy to defeat. Adding a deadbolt is one of the most effective, affordable upgrades for an exterior door.
What are deadbolt locks?
A deadbolt uses a solid bolt that only moves when you turn the key or thumb-turn. Unlike a spring latch, it cannot be pushed back with a card or knife.
Types of deadbolts
- Single cylinder: key outside, thumb-turn inside. The most common type.
- Double cylinder: key on both sides. Useful near glass, but check local fire and safety rules because it slows exit.
- Keypad and smart deadbolts: code or app access, often with a key override.
ANSI grades
Grade 1 is the most durable, Grade 2 is solid for most homes and Grade 3 is basic. For front and back doors, aim for Grade 1 or Grade 2.
Installation matters
A strong deadbolt in a weak frame can still fail. Long screws in the strike plate that reach the wall stud make a big difference.

A technician can recommend, supply and install a deadbolt and key it to your existing locks. See residential locksmith services.
