How to Limit Lost Productivity from Commercial Lockouts

When staff cannot get in, everything stops: no sales, no deliveries, no work. A little planning keeps a lockout from becoming a lost day.

Count the real cost

Add up staff hours, missed customers and delayed deliveries for a two-hour delay. For many businesses, that cost is far higher than a planned rekey or a spare key system.

Plan for who opens

Make sure at least two people can open the building on any given day, and that they live reasonably close.

Keep spares under control

A spare key in a lockbox or with a trusted manager is useful. A spare under the doormat is not.

Maintain the locks you depend on

Front door cylinders and latches are usually the first to wear out. Have them checked and lubricated before they start sticking.

Consider keyless access

Keyless entry locks remove lost keys from the equation; codes or cards can be reissued in minutes.

Have a locksmith number ready

Post a checked locksmith number where managers can find it.
